Help Sort through Second-hand Clothing with Environmental NGO Redress
Description: Did you know that in Hong Kong we dump around 170 tonnes of clothes in our landfills every day, equivalent to around 1.2 million t-shirts? There’s no getting away from it, the fashion industry is hugely polluting.
Redress is a pioneering Hong Kong environmental charity with a mission to educate and empower the fashion industry and consumers to reduce clothings negative environmental impact by shifting to circular solutions. One of the ways we do this is by increasing the re-sale, re-use and recycling of clothing. Through our Clothing Takeback Programme, we collect unwanted clothing from Hong Kongers, and then carefully sort it together with volunteers in order to redistribute it for re-sale at Redress' secondhand stores, re-use by those in need in our community through our work with 10+ local charity partners, or recycling. Our careful sorting process maximises the value of each item, better supports our charity partners by matching clothing with their specific needs, and reduces wastage.
As a part of the community and consumers, you can join our work in circular fashion by participating in our regular "sorting sessions".
Volunteer roles:
1. Help to unbox secondhand clothing donations into the sorting area.
2. Help to carefully sort secondhand clothing donations into 15 categories based on the item's type and condition.
3. Help to weigh boxes of sorted clothing and move them to the ‘OUT’ area.
4. Help to tidy-up the sorting area at the end of the session.
Remarks:
1. The duration of each session is 3 hours (including 15 mins briefing; 15 mins short break and review; 5 mins reflection)
2. Redress will provide safety and hygiene equipment (include gloves, masks, hand sanitizers, first aid kit, etc)
3. Please dress casually with closed-toe shoes and bring your own drinking water.
4. Volunteers are required to fill in the health declaration form on site.
5. Redress staff or the media may take photos or videos to record the activity for the purpose of sharing and promoting the charity’s work. Please inform a staff member on-site if you are uncomfortable with being photographed.
Remarks: Most of the charity partners are now facing a challenging funding landscape. Increased demand for services – due to funding reductions within the sector – coupled with reduced funding opportunities, from corporate engagements to grants, has created a critical need for support. Furthermore, rising operational costs, driven by inflation and other economic factors, mean that we require increased funding to simply maintain the current level of service.
Therefore, to ensure the stream of funding from engaging corporate partners and the best interactive volunteering experiences for everyone, the service sessions open at the HandsOn platform are only for individual participation.
If you and your friends from the same company wish to participate together, we recommend keeping your group size to no more than 3-5 people. Additionally, we kindly ask that you refrain from sharing or engaging in any promotional activities related to your company during the activity.
For companies' engagement, please contact Redress directly here.
