Opportunity Details
Promote mobility independence through wheelchair repairing
Programme description:
For many individuals with mobility impairments, a wheelchair is an integral part of their daily lives. Surveys show that over 60% of urban wheelchair users encounter maintenance challenges, leading to reduced mobility and increased accident risks (Source: Local Disability Research Institute, 2022). This programme aims to address these issues by inviting volunteers to help maintain and replace wheelchair tyres, a crucial task that directly affects users’ safety and comfort. Volunteers will receive a comprehensive briefing on wheelchair mechanics and learn the step-by-step procedures for replacing solid tyres. Under the guidance of professional wheelchair technicians, they will gain hands-on experience with specialised tools, practicing tasks such as safely detaching wheels, removing worn tyres, inserting new ones, and securely re-attaching components. In addition to acquiring technical skills, volunteers will develop a deeper understanding of the daily challenges faced by wheelchair users. Ultimately, the programme aims to enhance community accessibility and promote a more inclusive society.
