Description:
- Sadly in Hong Kong, just 8% of graduates from special schools for individuals with mild intellectual disabilities, go on to find employment. Barriers such as insufficient training, and a lack of awareness of suitable opportunities and employers' limited understanding, contribute to this low rate. Limited access to resources isolates them further from the broader community. With support from the State Street Foundation, HandsOn is collaborating with two special schools to enhance the job readiness of students with mild intellectual disabilities, focusing on areas ranging from communication skills to interview preparation and office etiquette. The training program comprises four workshops, along with company visits, practice sessions, outings, and internships in various industries. These valuable opportunities can only be made possible with the participation of volunteers.
- In each session, your role is key in training this group of students, acting as a role player in various scenarios and providing encouragement as they progress and solidify their learning. Upon volunteers' arrival at the school, we will offer a 30-minute briefing to enhance your understanding and equip you with the necessary skills to provide support. You are encouraged to then attend multiple sessions to experience first-hand the progress made by the students in this program and to help maximise their experience through the building of long-term, trusted relationships.
